FIREWORKS ARE NO FUN FOR PETS!

~ Seattle Humane Society offers pet safety tips for Independence Day
Make this Independence Day fun and SAFE for you and your pets! Big gatherings, loud noises, and startling fireworks are all the things we love about Independence Day – but they can be very frightening for our pets. With a little planning and precaution, you can ensure that this Independence Day is enjoyable for everyone.
Pet Safety Tips for Independence Day:
• KEEP PETS INDOORS
Keep your pets in a safe, enclosed room, preferably one without windows. If you're having guests over, consider keeping pets in a room that's off-limits to guests, with plenty of water and food.
• CREATE A CALMING ENVIRONMENT
Surround pets with their favorite toys and other familiar objects. Sometimes the smell of an article of clothing from your laundry can help comfort them. Play soothing music and keep the room as quiet as possible by closing doors, windows, and blinds.
• KEEP AWAY FROM FIREWORKS
Even if your pet doesn't seem obviously upset by fireworks, they can still cause harm to pets. Avoid potential burns, injuries, or possible ingestion by keeping all pets out of the vicinity of fireworks.
• UPDATE IDENTIFICATION
The biggest risk of all this Independence Day is that pets will get loose and become lost. Even if a pet is secured inside, the sound of fireworks can cause them to enter an extreme panic mode – sometimes even breaking through glass windows. Make sure your pets are micro chipped and wearing identification tags. Call to confirm that the pet's veterinarian and the microchip company have your current address and phone numbers.
The Seattle Humane Society offers $20 micro chipping services for pets of income-restricted guardians, including national registration. Visit us at seattlehumane.org to learn more about our micro chipping and licensing services and have your pets micro chipped today!

Tips On Keeping Your Pet Healthy

Just like human beings, animals have emotions and feelings too. They need the assurance that their masters love and care for them. In return, pets often reciprocate their love by demonstrating various forms of affection to their owners. These may include making soft purring sounds, licking and even body contacts like rubbing their heads or furs against them.
Pet care is an important responsibility of pet ownership. Pet care requires a lot of patience and is also a way of showing the animals that they are important to us. Pet care will include feeding our pets carefully and ensure that they are groomed properly to maintain a good health.
There are educational videos on pet care, that is, how to maintain the wellness and health of pets. These include various demonstrations on how to care for the different types of pets and what are the attentions required.
For four-legged pets such as dogs and cats, good pet care will include giving them regular baths, checking their paws and ears, trimming their nails as well as fixing regular health checks with a professional veterinarian.
Sanitation plays an important role to the health of the pets and their owners. Bathe your pets regularly and ensure that they are clean at all times. Buy a set of dishes especially for the pets and keep them separately from those used by human beings. After every use, wash the pets’ dishes thoroughly with soap and water, then give them a final rinse them with boiling water.
It is common for pets, especially dogs, to have fleas. Their bites are irritating and annoying; and make the pets feel uncomfortable if the scratching developed into skin rashes. Fleas are also the cause of other more dangerous and serious skin problems such as allergies or dermatitis. As such, good pet care will include conducting regular checks on the animals and getting rid of the fleas.
Dental care is another essential part of pet care. Most canine pets need to maintain a proper dental health care routine. A professional pet shop owner will be able to demonstrate the correct way to brush the animals’ teeth. This will prevent gum diseases or other health conditions related to poor oral hygiene.
Products such as detergents, cleaners, fertilizers and pesticides, must be kept well out of the way in the house. These contain chemicals that may be lethal or poisonous to animals and should not be within their reach. This is another way to exercise proper pet care.
Every pet owner, especially those first time owners, should be prepared for the big responsibility of having and owning a pet, as pet care takes more than just skills and experience. Value the existence of nature’s creations and ensure that the animals are given the best pet care. Lastly, always choose the best pet products and supplies so that your pet will have the best nutrition and pet care available.

Downtown Dog Rescue, Los Angeles, CA.

Benny Josephs was homeless, a cardboard box his only shelter. One of the few bright spots in his life was his dog, a pit bull terrier named Iron Head. Josephs and Iron Head were camping out near Modernica Inc., a furniture company in Los Angeles, California. One day, Lori Weise, a manager at Modernica, crossed their path. That's the day Josephs and Iron Head's live changed for the better. And it was the day that Weise found her mission. "I was so impressed with how the two were really one, " Weise says of Josephs and Iron head. "Iron Head was never on a leash and never strayed too far from Benny's sight."

Weise founded Downtown Dog Rescue in 1996 to provide resources for homeless people with dogs living on Los Angeles' Skid Row, helping them to spay and neuter, vaccinate, license and microchip their dogs. Downtown Dog Rescue provides care for the dogs, including food and medical services, and works closely with animal control agencies, homeless outreach workers and mental health-care professionals to improve the lives of both homeless people and their dogs.

"My goals are fairly simple: to offer services to those who need it most in a compassionate and thoughtful way that makes sense to the community we are serving," Weise says.

Downtown Dog Rescue helps keep dogs out of shelters, promoting retention through free dog training and support for common behavioral challenges. Weise operaes a kennel in downtown Los Angeles that serves as a rehabilitation center for dogs in the program. Modernica Inc. donates the kennel space.

Since its beginning, Weise's nonprofit all-volunteer organization has rescued, rehabilitated and adopted out more than 3,000 dogs, mostly pit bull terriers. Weise says her greatest inspiration is her pack of rescued dogs.

"Watching 20 dogs-is the biggest reward," Weise says. "I'm also constantly inspired by the challenges that a lot of homeless men and women face and how they are able to overcome the problem and advance in the recovery process. It's truly amazing and humbling to be part of."
Lorie Weise, founder.
